Okay, team! Today at practice, you get to put your math skills to the test. Get out your soccer balls, and let’s measure perimeter! Perimeter is the total distance around a two-dimensional shape like rectangles, triangles, and pentagons.
It’s time to warm up and run around this rectangular field. Find its perimeter to know how far we are running. It can be measured in inches, feet, yards, centimeters, or meters.
First, measure each side of the field. Then add all the sides to find the perimeter.
The sides of the field are 15 yards, 25 yards, 15 yards, and 25 yards.
Add the sides to get 80 yards. Now we know we’re running 80 yards every time we lap around the field.
Let’s measure this triangular flag next. To find the perimeter of a triangle, find the sum of all the sides.
Twelve inches plus twelve inches plus thirty inches equals fifty-four. Whoops! We forgot to find the total units: fifty-four inches.
Now grab your soccer ball. Take a closer look at the black pentagon on it.
Measure its five sides. Four centimeters plus four centimeters plus four centimeters plus four centimeters plus four centimeters equals twenty centimeters.
What an amazing math workout you had. You scored high with perimeter!
