Plant Needs Text Version
Taking care of a plant sure can be rewarding. But for your plant to grow and stay healthy, it needs five things to survive.
And it’s not a hamburger or a glass of lemonade. Or even a day chilling at the beach.
Plants need soil. Their roots grow under the soil and gather up water and nutrients for the plant. The roots also help the plant stay secure in the ground and keep them from blowing away during a storm.
Plants need water. Their roots gather up the water from the ground. The water travels through the stem to the leaves. Some plants need lots of water. Other plants, like cacti, don’t need as much. Cacti can store water and survive for a year without rain!
But be careful! Too much water can drown a plant. Too little can wilt a plant.
Plants need light. Light gives them energy. The Sun is a great way for plants to get light. Another source of light can be from artificial light, like light bulbs.
Plants need air. They breathe in the air just like you do. They use the air to make their food and get energy.
Plants need space to grow and stretch out. If they are too close together, they might not get enough sunlight. And their roots might not have enough space to get nutrients.
Now you know how to take care of your plant. Giving it soil, water, light, air, and space will help it grow and be healthy!
